Microfinance empowers farmers, youths and workers in Lebanon

North Lebanon, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon (ILO News) – The partnership between the ILO and Lebanese non-profit microfinance institution Al Majmoua has been a lifeline for farmers and agricultural workers in North Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

Against the backdrop of the country’s economic crisis and the conflict in Lebanon, this initiative–supported through the PROSPECTS partnership–has provided subsidized loans worth 1.3USD million, equivalent to 400 loans.

These funds have enabled farmers to purchase fertilizers, seeds, solar systems, and other essentials. The loans have revitalized farming activities, created and sustained over 1,300 jobs, and provided crucial support to families and the agricultural sector amid challenges.

Through the ILO’s "Improve Your Agri-Business" (IYAB) programme, more than 760 individuals have received training, including farmers, agricultural workers, and youth with start-up projects—50 percent of whom are women. Syrian refugees accounted for about 25 percent of the beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, over 800 participants graduated from the ILO Financial Education (FE) training, which focused on financial literacy, budgeting, savings, and investment strategies to help participants make informed financial decisions both personally and professionally. Of these, around 80 percent were women, and about 35 percent were refugees. Also, two FE certification workshops were conducted to certify nine FE trainers from Lebanon.

Participants have leveraged this support to overcome obstacles such as high production costs, limited access to markets, and climate-related challenges.

Many have used loans to build greenhouses, improve soil quality, and bring electricity to their farms, ensuring long-term sustainability. One farmer shared her plans to expand from five to six greenhouses, enhancing productivity on her land.

Farmers have faced immense challenges since 2020, from rising import costs and severe floods to the impacts of climate change, conflict and economic instability. By addressing these issues and revitalizing microfinance, the collaboration has strengthened international confidence in Lebanon's microfinance sector, paving the way for future growth and opportunities.
