Malawi validates national Alliance 8.7 strategic roadmap
Malawi achieved a significant milestone by successfully validating the National Alliance 8.7 Strategic Roadmap on an event organized with the support of the ILO as part of the ACCEL Africa Project.

Lilongwe, Malawi - On September 28, 2023, Malawi achieved a significant milestone by successfully validating the National Alliance 8.7 Strategic Roadmap on an event organized with the support of the ILO as part of the ACCEL Africa Project. The official validation meeting took place at the BICC in Lilongwe, Malawi, and was inaugurated by the Principal Secretary for Labour.
The Alliance 8.7 is a global partnership dedicated to fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration, with the primary objective of supporting governments in attaining SDG target 8.7, which calls for “immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms”. An impressive coalition of 231 organizations, spanning government institutions, workers' organizations, employers' organizations, civil society groups, and UN specialized agencies, funds, and programs, among others, form the backbone of Alliance 8.7's partners.
Malawi made a formal commitment to become an Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder country, a status it obtained in March 2020 through a voluntary request. This strategic Roadmap situates Malawi among the group of pathfinder countries that have pledged to accelerate their efforts towards eliminating child labour, forced labour, modern slavery, and human trafficking.
The Alliance 8.7 Roadmap for Malawi offers a comprehensive framework for action, encompassing priorities and interventions essential for achieving SDG Target 8.7. It delineates strategic outcomes, specifies timelines, establishes annual benchmarks and indicators to gauge progress, clearly defines roles and responsibilities, and identifies necessary resources, as well as any resource gaps. The roadmap aligns seamlessly with Malawi's Pathfinder Country status. Notably, the Malawi National Alliance 8.7 Strategic Roadmap focuses on the following priority areas:
