The Labour Inspectorate takes a decisive step towards a modernized, credible, and results-oriented system in Mali

BAMAKO (ILO News) – At a time when transformations in the world of work require stronger, more technical, and better-coordinated public responses, Mali is embarking on an ambitious effort to modernize its labour inspection system. From 2 to 6 February 2026, a preparatory workshop was held in Bamako to equip the Labour Inspectorate with the tools, leadership, and vision needed to implement its Strategic Plan for Compliance.

The workshop placed particular emphasis on strengthening institutional leadership and managerial capacities. Discussions focused on managing resistance to change, aligning visions, and building a core group of actors capable of driving deep systemic transformation.

A key milestone of the workshop was the finalization of the National Guide for Intervention in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). This technical reference tool aims to harmonize practices and structure inspection visits, contributing to a more consistent and effective enforcement of OSH standards nationwide.

Participants also worked on operationalizing the Strategic Plan. They defined indicators, operational targets, and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of interventions—particularly through targeted inspections in priority sectors such as agriculture, mining, and high-risk areas.

Within this framework, the National Task Force was confirmed in its strategic role. It will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Plan, ensuring coherence across interventions, and closely monitoring progress.

This workshop was supported by the ACCEL Africa project, which contributes to strengthening labour inspection systems, particularly in the areas of child labour elimination, occupational safety and health, and social protection.

The outcomes of the workshop mark an important step toward establishing a modernized, credible labour inspection system aligned with the current demands of the world of work, with the ultimate goal of improving compliance and strengthening the protection of workers.
