Participants from Ministries of Labour, Education, social partners and civil society organisations came together at the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC-ILO) in Turin, 8-12 April 2013, to review progress of an ILO-IPEC project which seeks to build improved coordination between work on child labour and education, "Combating child labour through education" project. The project is supported by the Government of the Netherlands and was announced at The Hague Global Child Labour Conference 2010.
The participants came from Bolivia, Indonesia, Mali and Uganda – the four project countries. The discussions focussed on progress made so far, follow up on recommendations made during a mid term review of the project and the priorities for the remainder of the project.
The participants shared experience on a range of interesting and important initiatives which have sought to strengthen inter-ministerial coordination on child labour and education, to deliver programme initiatives targeted at children vulnerable to child labour and to increase advocacy on the need to strengthen links between work on the two closely related policy areas.
There was also discussion on global advocacy work supported by the project including work to follow up on The Hague Roadmap for Achieving the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2016, cooperation with the Office of the UN Special Envoy on Global Education, and cooperation with Education International, the global organisation of education unions.
