Kenya Reviews Progress on Institutionalising Labour Migration Governance

On 4 February 2026, 27 representatives (11 women), from government institutions, workers’ and employers’ organizations, private employment agencies, civil society, and the ILO convened in Nairobi for the 5th Technical Working Group (TWG) on Labour Migration under the UK FCDO-funded BRMM Programme. The meeting focused on reviewing four years of BRMM implementation in Kenya and identifying sustainability measures to ensure continued progress in labour migration governance beyond the programme lifecycle. Participants reviewed key achievements, including support for the Labour Migration Management Bill, the Global Labour Market Strategy, the Germany–Kenya Labour Mobility Partnership, and the National Strategy on Skills Development for Labour Mobility. Discussions also highlighted reintegration support provided to over 1,200 returnee migrant workers through entrepreneurship training, vocational skills development, financial education, and access to finance initiatives.

Stakeholders reflected on lessons learned and discussed priority areas for continuity, including strengthening inter-agency coordination, sustaining Migrant Resource Centres, and advancing Kenya’s National Return and Reintegration Strategy. The meeting also reaffirmed the role of the Technical Working Group as a key platform for coordination, policy dialogue, and collaboration among institutions involved in labour migration governance in Kenya.
