ILO pursues its support of decent job creation in the agribusiness sector

The ILO through its ProAgro Ethiopia Project in collaboration with Amhara Bureau of Labour and Training (BoLT) and Sidama Bureau of Jobs, Skills and Enterprise Development Bureaus (BoJSED) is supporting decent job creation in the two regions in the country through wage employment and enterprise development by supporting Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The ILO Country Office Director, Alexio Musindo, together with ProAgro project team members visited Sidama BoJSED, Sidama Industrial Park Corporation, and MSMEs (two poultry and one vegetable production in Shebadino woreda) on 11 July 2023.
The Director met and discussed with Hailu Yetera, Deputy CEO, Sidama Industrial Park Corporation and Tewodros Gebiba, Deputy Head of Sidama BoJSED to better strengthen the partnership to create more decent jobs in the region in the agro-processing sector. Alexio Musindo also visited Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park and an employment service facilitation centre within the park that was established with the support of the ILO.
‘Melkam Hibret’ meaning “Good Union” is one of the enterprises developed with the support of the ILO in collaboration with Sidama BoJSED in the region. Members of the enterprise received the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) training supported by the ILO and benefited from the loan arrangement with a low-interest rate (10%) of Birr 100,000 (equivalent to $ 1800) facilitated by the Sidama BoJSED in collaboration with regional microfinance. The enterprise is engaged in the poultry sector and has five members (two female).
Biskut Asro, a 22-year, female member of Melkam Hibret enterprise stated, “I am now working in the poultry sector together with four other members where we received 800 day-old chicks to sell them after 45 days with expected profit.”
The ProAgro Project has trained a total of 234 entrepreneurs organised into 78 MSMEs with a focus on fruits and vegetables and the poultry sector. Among trained entrepreneurs, 119 were from Amhara with 41 (34.5%) female participants and 115 were from Sidama with 44 (38.3%) female participants.
The ProAgro Ethiopia project is implemented by the ILO with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany.
