Ethiopia Strengthens Diplomatic Capacity on Labour Migration

From 22–23 April 2025, the ILO and the Institute of Foreign Affairs trained 25 diplomats on international labour migration, legal frameworks, and their role in protecting Ethiopian migrant workers abroad.

The two-day workshop provided a practical platform for aligning Ethiopia’s diplomatic efforts with international labour standards, helping ensure that Ethiopian migrant workers receive timely support and protection abroad. A key session explored the role of diplomats in safeguarding Ethiopian workers overseas. Through group work and discussion, participants examined mediation, dispute resolution, wage protection issues, and collaboration with diaspora groups, local authorities, and social partners in destination countries.

The training concluded with action-planning exercises and a written assessment. Diplomats identified concrete steps for strengthening Ethiopia’s labour migration governance through their missions, including better monitoring, improved communication channels with workers, and stronger cooperation with institutions in destination countries.
