Ethiopia Hosts Third National Migration Research Conference

Held from 18–19 June 2025 at Mekelle University, the conference brought together researchers, policymakers, and development partners to strengthen evidence-based migration governance. Building on previous conferences held in Wolaita Sodo and Addis Ababa, the Mekelle conference served as a national platform for researchers, policymakers, and development partners to exchange knowledge, discuss research findings, and identify solutions to migration challenges facing Ethiopia. The two-day event focused on strengthening the link between migration research and policymaking, promoting coordination among migration actors, and advancing evidence-based decision-making at both national and regional levels.

The conference was officially opened by the Vice President of the Interim Administration of Tigray, Ato Amanuel Assefa, who emphasized that migration, especially irregular migration, remains a pressing concern for Ethiopia and the wider region. He noted that the eastern part of Tigray continues to serve as a major route for irregular migration, driven by post-conflict conditions and limited economic opportunities. He called for coordinated efforts by government institutions, researchers, and development partners to address the root causes of migration and to create alternatives that promote safe and regular pathways.

The event highlighted the need for a national research repository and improved coordination among research institutions. Recommendations emphasized regular migration pathways, reintegration support, and addressing drivers of irregular migration.
