Disability is not a limitation: How Farah found dignity through decent work
For Farah, a young man living with a disability in Kenya’s Dadaab region, finding meaningful work seemed impossible. The Rural Employment Services model helped him secure employment and build a stable life. His success now inspires others in his community.
Despite having qualifications and the determination, doors to access employment kept closing for Farah. Through the Rural Employment Services (RES) Farah received employability skills, practiced interview techniques and learned how to navigate the job application process with confidence.
Today, Farah works at FilmAid Kenya, as an Outreach Facilitator, earning a stable income and supporting his family. His story reflects how the RES approach—supported by ILO PROSPECTS and the National Employment Authority—goes beyond general employment services to address the specific barriers faced by vulnerable groups.
Working through trusted local partners, the RES programme creates inclusive pathways to decent jobs, enabling people with disabilities and other marginalised groups to achieve greater self-reliance. Farah’s journey is a powerful reminder that disability is not a limitation, but that equal access to opportunities can unlock potential and inspire others within the community.
