Digital leap for Uganda’s labour systems
ILO support aims to enhance the digital and operational capacity of Uganda’s labour market systems and strengthen workers' rights across the country.

Kampala, Uganda (ILO News) - On September 13, 2024, a handover ceremony took place where Ms. Caroline Mugalla, Director of ILO CO Dar-es-Salaam, handed over critical equipment that is required for the smooth functioning of the Labour Market Information System (LMIS) to the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) in Uganda., This support aim to enhance the digital and operational capacity of Uganda’s labour market systems and strengthen workers' rights across the country.
The LMIS is critical for the effective collection, storage, analysis, and dissemination of labour market and labour migration data, which is vital for evidence-based policymaking and program implementation. With the support of the ILO BRMM programme, staff from the MGLSD, Uganda Bureau of Statistics, and other stakeholders have already undergone extensive training in the development and implementation of the LMIS. The handover of the LMIS equipment marks an important step in enabling Uganda to manage its labour migration data efficiently and make it accessible to a broad array of users, ranging from policymakers to social partners.
The ceremony was a critical milestone in Uganda’s efforts to modernize its labour systems, promote decent work, and ensure the protection of workers' rights. Through the ILO’s ongoing support, the country is making strides in improving access to labour market information, enhancing the efficiency of its legal processes, and empowering trade unions to advocate for workers in even the most underserved areas. The event underscored the importance of continued collaboration between the ILO, the Ugandan government, and other stakeholders in advancing labour justice and fostering a fair and transparent labour system in Uganda.
