From Data to Action: Accelerating Labour Market and Migration Initiatives in Djibouti

Bringing together key actors from the government, social partners, private sector, media, and international partners, Djibouti validated, the assessment of Djibouti's labour market and migration data collection systems, on 18 October 2022, commissioned by the ILO and the Ministry of Labour in charge of Formalisation and Social Protection. This comprehensive assessment identified existing strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities within the country's data collection and analysis frameworks. Findings unveiled crucial insights and a clear path forward. It shed light on the limitations of current systems in Djibouti, highlighting the urgent need for harmonisation, coordination, and capacity-building among stakeholders. This validation workshop fostered national consensus on the assessment's findings and devised practical solutions to overcome the identified challenges. Through robust discussions and interactive sessions, stakeholders rallied around the need to adhere to international standards, enhance quality assurance procedures, improve IT systems and infrastructure, and strengthen data analysis and dissemination capabilities. The workshop marked a turning point in Djibouti's labour market and migration data landscape, paving the way for compelling reforms, including informed decision making that drive sustainable development and improve the lives of its workforce.

Improving labour migration statistics in Djibouti

Recognising the importance of strengthening the capacity of pertinent stakeholders, Djibouti also hosted a comprehensive two-day capacity-building workshop from 19 – 20 October 2022. Attended by 35 Djiboutian stakeholders, this empowering event focused on labour migration statistics, highlighting the 20th International Conference on Labour Migration Statistics (ICLS). Participants were engaged in a dynamic learning environment, exploring topics, such as the broadened scope and use of labour statistics, guidelines endorsed by the 20th ICLS, as well as the ILO's approach to Labour Migration Information Systems (LMIS). By equipping stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and skills, this capacity-building workshop set the stage for data-driven decision-making and a more robust labour market and migration information landscape in Djibouti. The capacity-building workshop empowered stakeholders with the necessary expertise to harness labour migration statistics effectively.
