From child labourer to hopeful dreamer: Janet’s inspiring journey

MALAWI (ILO News) - In the midst of adversity, a tale of resilience and transformation emerges through the remarkable success story of Janet, a young girl who once toiled in the shadow of child labour.

Janet's journey is a testimony to the extraordinary capacity of the human spirit to overcome challenges and the enduring power of education to light the way forward. From the darkness of child labour, she has emerged as a shining example of hope, as she not only escaped the clutches of exploitation but also embraced the opportunity for a brighter future.

With unwavering determination and the support of dedicated individuals and organizations, Janet has been successfully reintegrated to Milenje Primary school, symbolizing the triumph of education over adversity and the realization of dreams once thought to be out of reach.

Janet comes from Julizga Baloyi Village in the Traditional Authority Mabilabo in Malawi, an area of the country where the International Labour Organization’s Addressing Decent Work Deficits and Improving Access to Rights in Malawi’s Tobacco Sector (ADDRESS) project, funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, has intervened.

Janet’s life was marked by hardship, having lost her parents while still a toddler, leaving her in the care of an older brother who treated her more like a servant than a sibling.

Their humble abode sat near a tobacco farm, the source of their meagre livelihood. As the seasons changed, so did the demands of the tobacco farm. Janet's brother, driven by the need to make ends meet, forced her to skip school during planting and harvesting seasons.

She found herself toiling in the fields, carrying burdens beyond her years, and engaging in tasks that stole her time from the pursuit of education.

Her brother, the master of the tobacco domain in Julizga Baloyi, compensated her at the end of the year with a sum barely enough to sustain her through the next chapter of her life. Janet with an indomitable spirit, used that money to buy school materials and pay for development fees.

She understood the value of education, a beacon of hope in the shadows of her challenging existence.

Despite her brother's attempts to discourage her, Janet clung to the belief that education was her ticket to a better future. She attended classes whenever she could, facing the dual challenges of academic consistency and the physical toll exacted by the farm. Her brother, however, had no qualms about resorting to violence to keep her confined to household chores.

One day, fate intervened in the form of the ADDRESS Project child labour monitor from the Mabilabo area. Sensing the injustice Janet faced, the monitor engaged her in a conversation. Janet, with determination engraved across her face, shared her dreams of completing her education. She spoke of a future beyond the tobacco fields, where her hard work in school would be the foundation of a life free from bondage.

The monitor, moved by Janet's resilience, sought ways to help her break free from the chains that bound her. A stern warning was issued to her brother, highlighting the illegality of his actions and the potential consequences that awaited him if he persisted in hindering Janet's education.

Empowered by this intervention, Janet returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose. The threat of legal action against her brother remained a powerful deterrent that granted her the freedom she needed to pursue her studies without the fear of vengeance.

Janet’s journey, though fraught with challenges, was a testament to the transformative power of education and the support of those who recognized its importance. As she continued to excel in her studies, she carried with her the hope that one day, the toil in the tobacco fields would be a distant memory, replaced by the fulfilment of her dreams and the promise of a brighter future.

In a reassuring trip by the ADDRESS project, through the monitors under the Communities in Development Activities (COIDA), has provided Janet with educational materials as basic tools for education. The simple act of providing these materials has manifested a beacon of hope, a symbol that someone cared about her dreams and aspirations.
