Child Labour Survey Report for the Tea and Coffee Supply Chains Validated

Lilongwe, Malawi, 27 September 2023 - The International Labour Organization (ILO) through the Accelerating Action for the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains (ACCEL Africa) Project supported a validation meeting for Child Labour Survey Report for the Tea and Coffee Supply Chains. The meeting was officially opened by the Principal Secretary for Labour. During this meeting the report was successfully validated on 27 September 2023 at BICC in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The ILO Lusaka Country Director in his speech read on his behalf by Doctor Patrick Makondesa applauded Malawi for validating the Child Labour Survey Report as it is in line with the commitment made by the representatives of governments, employers’ organizations and workers’ organizations, together with United Nations Agencies, international and civil society organizations, businesses, children and academic institution at 5th Global Conference on Child Labour in 2022 in Durban, for scaling up data driven and survivor-informed policy and programmatic responses.

The Child Labour Survey was conducted in November 2022, through a partnership between the ILO and the National Statistics Office (NSO), in tea and coffee growing districts namely Mulanje, Thyolo, Ntchisi, Mzimba and Chitipa.

The ILO thanks the government of Netherlands for the financial support towards implementation of the ACCEL Africa, the government of Malawi, social partners and other implementing partners for the continued collaboration in implementation of interventions to eliminate child labour in Malawi.
