ATUMNET Members Strengthen Capacity to Promote Fair Recruitment for African Migrant Workers

As part of the African Trade Union Migration Network (ATUMNET) Action Plan (2025–2027) and in alignment with the AU Fair and Ethical Recruitment Strategy, as well as ongoing discussions within platforms such as the Doha Dialogue, the BRMM Programme, in collaboration with sister projects, organized a capacity-building workshop for ATUMNET focal points from 26–28 June 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The workshop brought together 43 participants (19 women) representing continental, regional and national workers’ organizations, migrant worker associations, media, and other ATUMNET members. The objective was to strengthen trade unions’ capacity to advocate for fair recruitment and to develop a unified strategy and advocacy messages for promoting fair recruitment of African migrant workers.

Participants were introduced to international and regional normative frameworks, practical tools, and guidance on fair recruitment. They exchanged experiences on good practices and key challenges affecting African migrant workers across recruitment corridors. The workshop culminated in the development of a set of common advocacy messages to guide ITUC-Africa’s future campaigns and inform ATUMNET’s engagement in inter-regional dialogues, including the upcoming Doha Dialogue meetings.

The session concluded with participants making individual pledges to champion fair recruitment principles within their respective organizations and areas of work, reinforcing ATUMNET’s growing leadership role in advancing rights-based migration governance across the continent.
