Argentina: Preventing of lay-offs and retaining workers in employment

Argentina has many national government programmes available in response to problems associated with the labour market. The international crisis created the need to strengthen and extend such programmes in order to respond to the consequences of a less dynamic economy. This note describes two cases addressing the employed population2 in an effort to maintain the level of employment. In this way, not only is rising unemployment prevented, but enterprises can keep their skilled manpower while workers maintain their job and occupation. The Crisis Prevention Procedure (Procedimiento Preventivo de Crisis - PPC) and the Production Recovery Programme (Programa de Recuperación Productiva - REPRO) are based on the development of good working relations between the parties and have proved to beinnovative and valuable ways to ensure job preservation and financial viability in enterprises during the crisis.
