The primary goal of the ILO is to promote opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security, and human dignity. Established in 1920, the main functions of the ILO-Rome office are to:

  1. represent the Organization in Italy and San Marino;
  2. conduct action-oriented policy research on topics that are of national priority;
  3. provide policy advice and technical support to the tripartite constituents of the two countries on international labour standards, labour and social policies and institutions and industrial relations;
  4. organize bipartite and tripartite dialogue and capacity-development initiatives on priorities of the government and the social partners, including in collaboration with the National Economic and Social Council;
  5. mobilize resources for ILO’s development cooperation activities;
  6. build partnerships with public institutions, universities and the media and collaborate with Italy-based offices of other UN Entities;
  7. produce and disseminate information and material in the Italian language to advocate for decent work policies, sound labour market institutions, social dialogue and industrial relations; and
  8. represent the ILO in meetings and events of the Rome-headquartered UN Agencies and the Holy See, when required.

Besides the Rome-based Office, Italy also hosts the ILO’s International Training Centre in Turin since 1965.
