Redoubling efforts to combat child labour and forced labour: What support can parliaments provide?
The workshop aims at taking stock of the progress made both at the national and internal levels, sharing best practices and reflecting on the role of parliamentarians in achieving the objective of making societies free from child labour and forced labour. It takes place in Geneva October 13-17, 2024.

With 2025 just around the corner, the current figures cast a rather gloomy light on the future of child labour and forced. 160 million children aged 5-17 are affected by child trafficking and child labour. Regarding forced labour, 27,6 million people are impacted, of whom 39% are women and girls, 12% are children.
The IPU has made it a priority to engage parliamentarians in promoting child rights and joining the general mobilization against child trafficking and labour, as well as forced labour. To that end, the IPU has joined forces with the ILO and UNICEF to take action to build the capacity of parliaments and their members. In particular, these can act:
- to ratify relevant ILO instruments, including Protocol P029
- to alter and restructure legislation to bring into line with international human rights standards.
The side event is one step in the framework of IPU-ILO collaboration. IPU is also a member of the Global Coalition for Social Justice.
