Working time and well-being: contributions of Time Use Surveys to the analysis of the labour market in Latin America

This technical report analyzes evidence from seven Latin American countries and demonstrates how time-use surveys can provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between working hours, caregiving responsibilities, commuting, and well-being, offering key inputs for the design of labor and gender equality policies.

The study underscores the importance of incorporating data from Time Use Surveys (TUS) into discussions on working time. Drawing on the most recent data from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, and Uruguay, it shows how these surveys make it possible to understand not only how much people work, but also how time is allocated across paid employment, domestic work, caregiving responsibilities, commuting, and leisure activities, according to different demographic and socioeconomic characteristics.
