Working at sea: A survey on the working condition of Filipino seafarers in the domestic shipping industry

Filipino seafarers are known to be the best and most sought after in the global shipping industry. They are in demand to crew ships at sea – from luxury cruise ships to giant tanks. Thus, the Philippines have become the largest supplier of seafarers in the global labour industry, making it the manning capital of the world.

The report presents the results of the survey and relates it with the decent work framework derived from the MLC. This information is envisioned to serve as a basis for the: (a) formulation of policies and intervention strategies for the government and other stakeholders in the domestic shipping industry; and (b) the ratification of MLC, 2006.
