Major accomplishments
Safety and Health for All Plantation Workers in South Asia
The plantation sector is a key pillar of South Asia’s economy, supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing to global exports of tea, coconut, cardamom, and rubber. However, the sector faces significant challenges, particularly in safeguarding the safety and health of workers.
The ILO’s Safety and Health for All Plantation Workers in South Asia project (2021-2024), funded by the Government of Japan, addressed these challenges by improving working conditions in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
The project interventions reached 33,662 workers (including 17,209 women) and resulted in 1,742 improvements across workplaces.
“At work, we often neglected safety and health issues, but through the project, we’ve made significant improvements. We now have shaded areas, safer working practices, and better sanitation, leading to healthier workplaces for all.”
— Devi Kumari Rai, OSH Committee Member, Nepal
“Since the project launch, we have seen a significant reduction in workplace fatalities, and women farmers have emerged as leaders in promoting OSH, contributing to long-term sustainable improvements.”
— Sanjoy Kishan, Minister of Labour and Employment, Assam
Looking Ahead
The ILO’s efforts under this project have laid the groundwork for lasting change, promoting safer and more sustainable workplaces in the plantation sector. As reforms continue, the lessons and partnerships established through this initiative will be instrumental in ensuring long-term improvements in workers’ safety and health.
