A Multidimensional Analysis of the persistence of Informality in Youth-led Businesses

Kasulu, Tanzania (ILO Brief) - Previous research, including by the International Labour Organization (ILO), has highlighted a significant correlation between the various dimensions of poverty and informal employment. For example, household size and composition play crucial roles, as working individuals may still fall below the poverty line due to sharing their income with dependents (ILO, 2016). This field research aimed to investigate how this correlation influences the likelihood of youth-led enterprises and self-employed youth transitioning from the informal to formal economy in the Kigoma region. This research brief outlines the findings of the qualitative research approach, involving the use of focus group discussions (FGDs).
