On-Job-Training Manual for the poultry sector

This publication presents a comprehensive overview of Ethiopia’s efforts to transform its poultry sector as part of a broader national strategy to enhance food security, economic inclusion, and climate resilience. It highlights the government’s goal to increase poultry’s share in national meat consumption from 5% to 27% by 2030—an initiative tied to both environmental sustainability and reduced reliance on red meat. Despite growing demand and government support, the sector remains constrained by low productivity among smallholders, limited access to quality inputs, and significant skill gaps across the value chain. The document emphasizes the need for practical, hands-on training and competency-based education to equip farmers, especially women and youth, with the technical and entrepreneurial skills required to boost production, strengthen value chains, and create decent jobs. It introduces an on-the-job training manual designed to close critical skill gaps, enhance productivity, and support Ethiopia’s vision of a modern, commercially viable, and climate-smart poultry industry.
