ITC Training Module Part 5

This module focuses on labour standards and working conditions as a key function of labour administration relating to labour protection. It outlines some key International Labour Standards and shows how some of their provisions regarding conditions of work and terms of employment are applied in practice.

Since 1919, the International Labour Organization has maintained and developed a system of international labour standards aimed at promoting opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and dignity. In today's globalized economy, international labour standards are essential components in the international framework for ensuring social justice. According to the report of World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization, ILO Geneva 2004, the rules of the global economy should be aimed at improving the rights, livelihoods, security, and opportunities of people, families and communities around the world. Many studies recognize the importance of labour market institutions in this era of globalization .
