Investigating the Worst Forms of Child Labour - A series of rapid assessments

The International Labour Organization’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), through its Statistical Information and Monitoring Programme on Child Labour (SIMPOC), has conducted 38 rapid assessments and two national reports on the worst forms of child labour across 19 countries and border areas.

These investigations were carried out using a new rapid assessment methodology on child labour, developed jointly by the ILO and UNICEF.

The assessments explored highly sensitive areas, including illegal, criminal, or morally exploitative activities. The specific forms of child labour and research locations were carefully selected by IPEC staff in consultation with IPEC partners. The investigations focused on the following categories of the worst forms of child labour:

  • Children in bondage
  • Child domestic workers
  • Child soldiers
  • Child trafficking
  • Drug trafficking
  • Hazardous work in commercial agriculture, fishing, garbage dumps, mining, and urban environments
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Working street children
