Kazakhstan promises to be a major country in the twenty-first century. Its land area is approximately the same as the whole of the European Union, and it has rich natural resources, as well as a reasonably well-developed industrial and agricultural base. The labour market will surely undergo profound dislocation as it emerges as a basic feature of a new type of economy.
