Convergences: Decent work and social justice in religious traditions
This handbook demonstrates the convergence of values among n different religions and spiritual traditions. On the subject of work, human dignity, solidarity and above all the connection between work, social justice and peace put all traditions on a common ground.
Among religious and spiritual movements, there is great concern over the downside of globalization. Poor wages, unsafe working conditions, unemployment, forced labor, child labor, and a lack of social protection are identified as challenges. Human dignity is undermined. Achieving decent work for all—ensuring that opportunities for work respect human dignity within the context of each society—is crucial for restoring balance and embedding human values in policy decisions.
In 2010, the ILO, alongside the World Council of Churches, recognized the interconnection between peace, social justice, and the world of work. This shared understanding led to the creation of a joint initiative, later strengthened by the participation of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The handbook born from this collaboration illustrates how different religious and spiritual traditions converge on the core values of human dignity, solidarity, and the link between work, social justice, and peace. It offers inspiration and guidance for future efforts. This first step opens the door to continued cooperation, drawing on shared values to advance social justice and foster a fairer globalization.
