Market systems analysis

Commercializing livestock production in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic

A market systems analysis of the livestock sector for the Rural Employment Promotion Programme in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic

The focus of this market systems assessment (MSA) is to examine the performance of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s livestock industry within three subsectors – cattle, poultry, and pigs – as part of the Rural Employment Promotion (REP) in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic project (2022–2031). The report presents the context, methodology, analysis of the constraints and opportunities for workers and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the livestock market system and its interconnected employment market system, as well as recommendations for intervention areas. The findings will be used to design interventions for the REP project, targeting women and men in rural areas, particularly ethnic minority groups, persons with disabilities (PWDs), youth, returned migrant workers and LGBTQI+ persons of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. This project will be implemented by the ILO with funding from the United States.
