Climate-Smart and Water-Efficient Agriculture in Lebanon: Enhancing Productivity, Sustainability, and Decent Work

This report presents and analyses data from a climate-smart and water efficient pilot implemented across fifteen farms in Lebanon under the BOUZOUR project – Building Inclusive Markets and Decent Work for Syrian Refugees and Lebanese Host Communities – funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

The intervention focused on the agriculture sector as a key source of livelihoods for Lebanese farmers and agricultural workers, including Syrian refugees, and examined how climate-smart and water-efficient practices can contribute to more sustainable production while improving working conditions and job quality.

The pilot assessed sensor-based irrigation and fertigation systems in comparison with traditional farmer-managed practices across greenhouse and open-field production systems. Covering multiple crops, the study generated quantitative and qualitative evidence on water, fertilizer, and energy use, productivity, labour requirements, and on-farm working conditions. The findings aim to inform scalable interventions that strengthen climate resilience, farm viability, and decent work in Lebanon’s agricultural sector.
