Case study on improving maternity insurance practices in China

This publication intends to capture key recent reform measures in China’s maternity protection, with a focus on reducing maternal healthcare costs and the individual financial burden of giving birth. It reviews and analyses current national strategies and showcases effective local practices. By presenting China’s experience, the brief intends to contribute to regional and global exchanges and mutual learning on how effective maternity protection policies and measures can reduce the financial burden of maternity care.

The report was developed by researchers from Chinese Academy of Labour and Social Security (CALSS) in collaboration with the National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) of China, who offered technical guidance on the report content. This report received technical and financial support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and constitutes an important output of the project“ Improving China’s institutional capacity towards universal social protection (Phase 2)”, funded by the European Union (EU).
