The ILO is therefore pursuing its efforts to strengthen the economic component of reintegration programmes for former child soldiers in relevant countries worldwide.

The European Union is funding an ILO Somalia project in Mogadishu to support the economic reintegration of children formerly associated with armed forces and groups (CAAFAG) and support children at risk of recruitment.

Executive summary of the Action

The project has the following objectives:

Overall objective:

To contribute to the effective prevention of child recruitment and reintegration of children associated with armed forces and armed groups (CAAFAG) in south central Somalia.

Specific Objective:
  • An integrated common approach to social and economic integration of working age former CAAFAG and children at risk of recruitment is piloted through interagency collaboration.
  • Local actors have the capacity to provide the required services for the economic reintegration of CAAFAG and children at risk of recruitment.
  • Reintegrate former CAAFAG and other children at risk of recruitment above the minimum working age.
These objectives are achieved through the following results:

Result 1.1: The project implementing partner (IP) has the capacity to implement and monitor the integrated common approach to social and economic re-integration of children.

Result 1.2: The integrated common approach to reintegration of children is developed and documented through a participatory approach.

Result 2.1: The capacity of local actors supporting economic reintegration is increased.

Result 3.1: Beneficiaries have acquired marketable skills and are prepared to enter decent employment.

Result 3.2: Beneficiaries are supported to enter and maintain decent (self) employment.
