Decent Work for Domestic Workers in Sri Lanka

Supported by the Government of Sweden, this programme aims to promote decent work for domestic workers through advocacy to bring domestic workers within the ambit of national labour laws, promote ratification of C189, and to strengthen organisation of domestic workers

Increased capacity of constituents to provide adequate labour protection in diverse forms of work including in the informal economy

Strategies

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted societies and economies globally. Domestic workers who are in the informal economy has been severely impacted by the pandemic through loss of income, lack of social security, poor access to personal protective equipment etc.
  • This initiative aims to promote decent work for domestic workers through advocacy to bring domestic workers within the ambit of national labour laws, promote ratification of C189, and to strengthen organisation of domestic workers

Expected results

  • Rapid Assessment of COVID19 impact on domestic workers, their needs (including social protection), and provide humanitarian support to affected workers
  • Gap Analysis of Labour Laws and Policies (including registration of domestic workers and grievance handling mechanism)
  • Strengthening C189 advocacy efforts and capacity-building of constituents on C189 for implementation
  • National Tripartite + committee established
  • Road-Map for formalisation of domestic work including model contract of employment for domestic workers and ratification of C189
