Child Labour
The initiative seeks to assist the Government of Zimbabwe to meet its obligations as required under the ILO Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No.182), ratified by Zimbabwe on 11 December 2000. With regard to child labour, there is a strong commitment among key stakeholders in Zimbabwe that there is an urgent need to progressively reduce incidences of child labour, protect working children and to work toward the immediate elimination of the worst forms of child labour by adopting a holistic approach.

ILO/Harare with technical backstopping from IPEC and in collaboration with UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO and IOM under the UNDAF process is assisting the country in putting in place measures and taking steps to implementing a programme to eliminate child labour in Zimbabwe.
In line with the provisions of C.182 the Government of Zimbabwe in collaboration with other stakeholders including social partners and NGOs working on children’s issues have so far conducted a Rapid Assessment(RA) Survey to ascertain the nature and extent of the Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL) in Zimbabwe. Previous data gathering exercises including the Labour Force Surveys undertaken in 1999 and 2004 have not covered these forms of child labour (e.g. slavery and slavery-like practices; the use of children in sexual exploitation; and in illicit activities and hazardous).
The Survey Report was adopted by the project’s National Steering Committee in November 2009 and currently being edited in preparation for printing and eventual dissemination. The stakeholders have also drawn elements for a time-bound programme for elimination of child labour in Zimbabwe. IPEC is going to assist with drawing up a concept note for resource mobilization.
