Project details

A Joint Programme of the International Labour Organization, International Telecommunication Union and the African Union.

Our mission is to enable more young Africans to access decent work in the digital economy by implementing country-specific interventions, understanding what works and collaborating for impact.

The ILO and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ‒ in support of the African Union (AU) and under the umbrella of the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth ‒ are implementing a programme to empower African youth, ensuring they benefit from new opportunities in Africa’s growing digital economy and steer it forward with their energy and creativity.

The joint programme is continental in scope and has started in six countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa.

The programme takes a multidisciplinary and evidence-driven approach. This includes:
  • Country-specific interventions to create decent jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities, strengthen young people’s digital skills, and prepare employment services for the digital era
  • Generating new evidence for data-driven action
  • Establishing partnerships and networks to enhance impact
Youth empowerment being at its core, the programme works with and for young people. As key partners, young people were involved in the design of the programme and are engaged in its implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and governance.
