Not all superheroes wear capes. Some advocate for systems to protect young workers during times of need.

What does it mean?
It means making sure workers have access to social protection like healthcare, income support, or leave when life takes an unexpected turn.

What can I do?
You can speak up for stronger safety nets, help others understand their entitlements, and push for fair protections for all workers.

Ariana, 26 years old, Colombia

The challenge

I developed a serious health condition and had to take a month off work. My employer was very understanding and granted me the time off I needed. However, when I returned, I noticed a clear change in my supervisor’s attitude toward me. They became distant, excluded me from team discussions, and seemed to doubt my ability to handle important tasks.

The inaction

I wasn’t sure how to approach the situation as it wasn’t a violation of my rights per se but discriminating against me because of my health felt wrong. I stayed silent and tried to prove myself by working even harder.

The impact

I pushed myself beyond what my body could take and both my mental and physical health suffered. I felt terrible. Looking back, I wish I had had the courage to just speak directly to my manager and try to resolve any issues.

Lucas, 28 years old, Brazil

The challenge

My work involves operating heavy machinery and equipment. A few years ago, my arm got caught in a faulty machine, and I had to undergo surgery. My wife was expecting a baby and I was concerned that my injury would affect my ability to support my family as I wouldn’t have been able to work for many weeks.

The action

I discussed the issue with HR immediately. I was guided that I should file a report and an investigation into the issue would be launched. I was told that depending on the outcome of the investigation, my medical expenses may be covered by my employer. I filed a report right away.

The impact

The investigation found that my employer was using old and bad quality equipment that contributed to my injury. My medical costs were covered by my employer and I was compensated for the damages. I also continued to receive my salary for the period of absence from work due to my injury. I’m glad I went to HR and asked for advice on addressing the problem.
