The Accelerator for Agriculture and Agroindustry Development and Innovation Plus (3ADI+)

Suriname, despite its extensive forest coverage, relies heavily on natural resources like gold, timber, oil, and gas. The Multi-Year Development Plan 2022-2026 aims to diversify the economy and promote sustainable development, aligning with the SDGs and ensuring a just transition that respects the rights of indigenous and minority communities. The UN Agencies, including FAO, UNIDO, UNFPA, and ILO, are implementing a Joint Programme (JP) to attract SDG-compliant investments into the pineapple value chain, increasing productivity and income for smallholders. This programme will create business opportunities, facilitate market access, and ensure environmental sustainability.

The JP aims to transform Suriname into an established producer and exporter of high-quality organic pineapples, enhancing productivity and competitiveness for pineapple value chain actors, especially indigenous producers.

The ILO will facilitate the establishment and strengthening of farmer organizations. This initiative connects with the Program and Budgeting Priority under Outcome 4: Sustainable enterprises for inclusive growth and decent work, promoting the business potential and competitiveness of SSE entities. The Council for Cooperatives of the Ministry of Labour will be strengthened, with alignment sought with other ministries, particularly Regional Development and Agriculture. Likewise the Program seeks to enhance resilience of farmers by equipping them with technical tools on risk coping and financial literacy.
