Young Trade Union Leaders in Luzon Trained on Basic Trade Union Leadership

At least 12 workers’ organizations at the national and local union levels, who participated in these series of trainings, are able to use knowledge they have gained specifically on trade union rights and employment relations in implementing their re-entry plans to either create/strengthen federation level Youth Committees and organize more young workers into the union.

Last 14-17 July 2015, 34 new and potential trade union leaders from Luzon participated in a Basic Leadership Training in San Jose del Monte Bulacan. This three and a half day training was conducted by the ILO Country Office for the Philippines (CO-Manila), in coordination with the Confederation of Independent Unions in the Public Sector (CIU-PS) and with the support of the ILO-Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) Partnership Programme. This is the last of a series of regional Basic Leadership Trainings covering topics such as union organizing and becoming effective shop stewards, trade union leadership and results oriented planning and collective bargaining, which were conducted under the Project since 2014.

A core group of young trade union leaders led the design of the programme and served as facilitators for the training. Mr Arun Kumar, ILO Regional Office, Specialist on Workers’ Activities, served as resource person on the technical presentations during the training.

Participating labour organizations in the training were the Alliance of Progressive Labor-Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (APL SENTRO), Federation of Free Workers (FFW), Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), CIU PS, Philippine Independent Public Sector Employees Association (PIPSEA), Philippine Government Employees Association (PGEA), Public Services Labor Independent Confederation (PSLINK) and the National Youth Commission Employees Association (NYCEA).
