Workshop to prepare for a Sector Study in Nepal (ECLM project)
A Workshop was held in Kathmandu from August 29 - September 2 in in the context of the project "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM). The workshop was organised in collaboration with Social Science Baha, a research institution in Nepal, and discussed the implementation of a study of the manufacturing and small trade sectors.
During the workshop, the main instruments for qualitative data collection in the manufacturing and small trade sectors were discussed in detail and tested in the field. The instruments will be used to conduct stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions among workers and interviews with companies active in manufacturing and trade. The study aims to provide an overview of immigrant workers in these sectors in Nepal and to analyse why the economic contribution of migrant workers in these sectors might be different from the contribution of native workers. Similar studies have been undertaken by the ECLM project in collaboration with research institutions in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Kyrgyzstan.
