Workers meet on living wages, mechanisms and challenges
Workers organizations in the Philippines discussed the concept of living wages, impediments for unions, determination mechanisms and addressing inequalities.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) hosted a two-day meeting with workers’ organizations and trade union representatives on wages, which discussed how to establish a living wage.
The meeting gathered workers' perspectives on wage determination mechanisms, associated challenges, and policy recommendations, including leveraging collective bargaining.
With the Philippines becoming a pathfinder country, trade unions were encouraged to engage in the development of the roadmap for the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, which will have an initial focus on the construction and transport sectors.
The meeting also covered continuing efforts to promote workers’ freedom of association to further their rights and interests, global trends on employment, a special focus on the youth situation as well as green and blue economy opportunities for unions.
The Strengthening Freedom of Association and Action Against Child Labour Project funded by the Labour Program of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) supported the meeting.
