Webinar: The Social and Solidarity Economy in Africa

This webinar will present the preliminary findings and recommendations of an African Union and ILO study, synthesizing the results of mapping studies on the SSE in six African countries: the DRC, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria and Zambia.

In August 2024, the African Union (AU) adopted its 10-year Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) strategy and implementation plan which was a culmination of recent global and regional developments as outlined in an ILO and AU brief (available in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese).

To support the implementation of the strategy, the ILO and the AU conducted mapping studies on the SSE in six African countries: the DRC, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Zambia.

The synthesis report consolidates the findings from the six country studies. It identifies the similarities and differences of the SSE across the six countries and discusses the challenges and opportunities to advancing the SSE. It concludes with recommendations on ways to strengthen the SSE for decent work and sustainable development.

The ILO and the AU invite policy makers, social partners, SSE practitioners, and academics to this webinar where the preliminary findings and recommendations of the synthesis report will be presented, followed by a discussion.
