Webinar: Report presentation and discussion on “Understanding patterns of structural discrimination of migrant and other workers in some countries of South and West Asia”.
The webinar will be a presentation of a recently released background paper titled “Understanding patterns of structural discrimination of migrant and other workers in some countries of South and West Asia” by the authors; Igor Bosc, Jens Lerche, Alpa Shah, Miranda Fajerman and Neha Wadhawan followed by a Q&A discussion. The opening remarks will be delivered by Philippe Vanhuynegem, Branch Chief, Fundamentals, ILO Geneva.
While references to international non-discrimination standards do occasionally surface in public discourses, this paper reviews evidence that discrimination in the world of work is not only characterized by socially deviant cases of discriminatory abuse, as often reported in the media, but is rather intrinsic to the way various market economies and political systems are structured. The report reviews how certain laws, policies and practices are drivers of migration in countries or areas of origin of migrant workers and how other sets of laws, policies and practices in destination areas of migrant workers absorb them into the lower echelons of the labour market forming a new working class and widening labour hierarchies.
