Training for Labour Inspectors on Maritime Labour Convention
Indonesian just recently ratified the MLC, 2006, and shows a strong commitment to provide protection in addition to protection for the improvement of the welfare of Indonesian seafarers working on board foreign flag and/or Indonesian flagged vessels sailing in international waters also as protection for the ship industry.
Background and Objective
At the International Labour Conference - 94 dated February 23, 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland, the ILO adopted the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as the international rules that govern the field of maritime employment. Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, or MLC 2006 update 37 (thirty-eight) of the ILO conventions and related recommendations since 1920 in the field of maritime and is expected to create an instrument that is integrated with 8 (eight) of the ILO Core Conventions, the MLC, 2006 is intended to realize the mandate of the ILO to promote decent working conditions that refer to the 1998 ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (Fundamental Principles and Rights at Works, 1998).The comprehensive nature of the MLC, 2006, could provide a challenge for some countries. The Convention brings together, in one legal instrument, a diverse range of regulatory concern – including minimum age for seafarers, medical fitness, recruitment and placement services, repatriation, on-board accommodation, occupational safety, social security, maritime labour inspection and certification and port State control. Often these issues are addressed at the national level by different agencies or departments and in various forms of legislation.

In order to ensure the effective implementation of the MLC, 2006 Based on the request from the Directorate General of Labour Inspection and Occupational Health and Safety, the Ministry of Manpower (MoM) in collaboration with the ILO will conduct a training on the MLC,2006 for the labour inspectors. The training aims to improve knowledge and ability for the labour inspectors on MLC.
