Technical Training Workshop

A technical training workshop was organized for representatives of selected Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as the academia from 15th to 18th May 2017. The rationale was to improve participants understanding on how to scientifically measure the effects of trade and sector policies on employment generation. Resource persons combined academic style of lectures with field visits to expose participants to both the theories and practice of measuring employment effects of trade
and sector policies.

Participants were varied representatives from selected from key stakeholder institutions. In attendance were representatives
of the key Ministries; Employment and Labour Relations, Trade and Industry, Food and Agriculture Works and Housing, Roads and Highways and Finance. Representatives of government agencies, department and academia were also present. The main objectives of the technical training workshop was to identify, measure and assess the employment effects of sectoral and trade policies in their organisations and beyond; develop knowledge on how to strengthen the positive impact on employment of sectoral and trade policies; discuss relevant methods for employment impact assessment of sectoral and trade policies among others. The lead consultants of the three studies being undertaken concurrently by the project expounded their findings in concise PowerPoint presentations; Background Studies on Employment in the Agriculture and Agro –Processing Sectors in Ghana; Background Study on Employment in the Infrastructure Sector in Ghana and Impact of Trade on Employment in Ghana.

Trainings bordered on the use of global software such as World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS), computations in spotting export potential and estimating Employment effects; use of social accounting matrices framework to assess employment effects in trade, and computing economic and multiplier direct and indirect effects on employment.
