Technical Seminar on Impact and Lessons Learnt on School to Work Transition (The Closing Seminar of the ILO-EAST Project)

Background

ILO EAST is a four-year project (2007 – 2011) funded by the Government of Netherlands and executed by the International Labour Organization that aims (a) at improving the employability and capacity for entrepreneurship among young women and men through improved access to high-quality and relevant educational and training opportunities, and (b) at contributing to the elimination of child labour. The geographical coverage includes Papua, West Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, South Sulawesi, and Aceh provinces.

After four years of implementation, ILO EAST project will have been able to produce (a) tracer studies and good practices to document its impact, (b) tools to facilitate its replication. ILO EAST is now proposing to share these results and tools with national stakeholders, as part of a closing seminar, in particular to assist the Government in its planning process (Musrenbang). The seminar will focus ILO EAST four major themes which are (1) Keeping children in school up to minimum age of employment, (2) Character building (3) Job and Education Counselling, and (4) Employability, and Entrepreneurship.

Objective

• To discuss quantitative and qualitative evidence of EAST impact;
• To advocate for the replication of ILO EAST modules including SCREAM, 3Rs, Children Belong in Schools, Life skills, Job and Education Counseling, 4 in 1 handbook for non-formal training providers, BLK pathway to rehabilitation, Know About Business, Start and Improve Your Business, Learning Conversations, Youth Rights @ Work, Financial Education.
• To decide on possible upscaling of EAST at provincial and national levels.

Methodology

All sessions will be participatory relying on short presentations, practical exercises, and open discussions between participants. The first part (presentation of impact) will be implemented as question and answers session with three consultants that have looked into EAST impact through tracer studies, good practices and evaluation. The second part will be organized as a “speed geeking” session where the 150 participants will learn about each tool in small groups. The last part will allow participants to meet by provincial / national groups and prepare a plan for the upscaling of EAST activities

Selection of the participant

150 participants will be selected including members of the EAST national steering committee, members of EAST national technical committee, representatives of provincial steering committee, implementing partners and donors will participate in the workshop.
