Awareness raising
The Swaziland Government, in collaboration with Workers and Employers, commemorated Child Labour Day 2017 in Ezulwini. Various activities took place over 3 days, 9 - 12 June.
The commemoration was an awareness-raising activities on the issue of child labour in Swaziland, such as the commemoration of the World Day against Child Labour (annually on 12 June).
The objective of the Child Labour Awareness Raising Campaign:
Child labour often occurs because of a lack of awareness and an ignorance of the risks.
That’s why raising awareness is so important. Every child has a right to education as per the laws of the country; and it is time that we begin implementing the same effectively to get rid of this menace that is destroying the economy and future growth of the country.
The country should ensure that child labour is banned and every child has secure and happy childhood. In our own small way we should also not encourage child labour in our homes and neighbourhood and discourage those who think of employing children as domestic helps or making them do all kinds of odd jobs.
On Friday, 9 June two community schools were visited by officials from Ministry of Labour and presentations made to students on child labour. Interviews were consulted with individuals in the domestic, informal and agriculture sector on their understanding of the child labour and child work.
Focus group awareness discussions were held with the Union members of the Sectors mentioned above on their understanding of child labour
A breakfast meeting was held on 12 June, with all key stakeholders and the members of the media on the 12th June to commemorate Child Labour Day.
