Seminar on Options for Reform and Improvement of Thailand’s Pension System, Bangkok.

The Seminar will present an opportunity to share with an audience of national stakeholders the latest developments on the global pension debate, including lessons from countries in the region. It will also provide an open forum for national stakeholders on the preliminary findings of the report on Systemic Review of Thailand’s Pension System – Exploring Options for Reform and Improvement. The seminar would be an important contribution to its finalization; at the same time that it could be an opportunity to collect contributions to the discussion on a future vision for a Pension System in Thailand.

The ILO has been a proud partner of the Government of Thailand in this process, providing technical support in different moments, including technical advisory missions, production of technical notes and reports and support to capacity building efforts. The financial sustainability of pension systems is a serious matter of global concern for the ILO, as well as in Thailand, and for this reason the ILO has been advocating for gradual but necessary parametric reforms.

Thailand belongs to those group of countries that can be acknowledged for its thoughtful and steady implementation, maintenance and gradual extension of social protection. In the last 30 years, the International Labour Organization had the opportunity to witness the remarkable progresses of Thailand in the area of social protection, which made the country a regional and global reference for its thoughtful and gradual extension of social protection. However, it is also important to acknowledge that due to Thailand’s demographic and economic situation further action is required in order to maintain, and possibly improve, what has been reached thus far.
