Regional technical training on trade and employment for specialists from Southern Mediterranean countries

The Mainstreaming Employment into Trade and Investment (METI) project conducted its first regional technical training on trade and employment. The 5-day training brought together technical experts from the Southern Mediterranean countries and was held from 31 October to 4 November 2022 at the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) in Turin.

During the training, 15 specialists from relevant government departments, social partners and other national institutions from the MENA region learned from inputs provided by ILO colleagues from headquarters and the field, as well as by ITCILO, ITC, UNCTAD, OECD and DataWheel.

The hybrid event featured lectures, hands-on training sessions and a panel discussion. The training was conducted using a participative methodology, including plenary sessions with keynote speakers, panel discussions, lectures by experts, peer-learning sessions and hands-on sessions that allowed participants to apply the different methods for assessing the impact of trade policies on employment.

The Regional Technical Training covered the following topics:

Nexus between trade and employment;
Analysing the effects of trade policies on employment;
Opportunities and constraints related to the collection, classification, and analysis trade and employment data;
Quantitative and qualitative techniques for assessing the impact of trade policies on employment;
Value chain analysis and development.

As peer learning was a key component of the training, participants were invited to share good practices examples related to trade and employment policies from their respective institution or country during a Knowledge Fair.
