Regional South-South Cooperation Seminar on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers in Latin America and the Caribbean Region
Regional Seminar attended by ILO constituents and other stakeholders from 5 countries from Latin American and the Caribbean aiming at encouraging collaborative actions based on social dialogue and geared to promoting well-governed labour mobility within the protection framework of international human and international labour standards.
Under the framework of the South-South Cooperation Project for the Protection of Rights of Migrant Workers in Latin America and the Caribbean Region implemented by ILO in coordination with the ministry of Labour and Social Security of Brazil, a Regional Seminar was conducted in Brasília with ILO constituents and other stakeholders of the countries involved in the project: Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago, and Mexico as an observer. The objective of the seminar was to encourage collaborative actions based on social dialogue and geared to promoting well-governed labour mobility within the protection framework of international human and international labour standards.
General Objective: To promote the exchange of information on: current labour migration trends in the region; collection and analysis of migration statistics; gaps and challenges concerning working conditions; and existing good practices concerning labour migration and protection of the labour rights of migrant workers.
Specific Objectives:
Based on the documents produced by external consultants, promote the debate and gather inputs from participants concerning the following topics: Statistics on labour migration; Critical gaps concerning the protection of the rights of migrants living in the region; Labour migration trend analysis for the region; Labour Migration: Laws, Policies and Good Practices.
Map labour migration good practices from the region, and particularly from Brazil, (either promoted by governments, workers and employers’ organizations, civil society, and other actors) in order to increase awareness on the protection of migrant workers’ labour rights.
Identify synergies and possibilities of South-South cooperation among the countries invited (e.g. projects and activities) as a way to offer a more integrated response to labour migration issues addressed at the Latin America and Caribbean regional level.
