BRIDGE II

Media engagement is essential to raise awareness of forced labour and promote fair recruitment

National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia (NHRCM) and the ILO organized a meeting to promote an ILO media toolkit on forced labour and fair recruitment. The meeting was funded by the ILO Bridge II project.

The new edition of the ILO media toolkit: Reporting on Forced Labour and Fair Recruitment was presented to managers and teaching staff of universities, training institutions and associations for journalism in Mongolia.

Since 2020, the ILO and NHRCM are partnering to improve media engagement on forced labour and fair recruitment issues. Under this partnership, the NHRCM adapted the media toolkit to the Mongolian context and trained journalists and media professionals. The toolkit is designed for journalists who want to improve their skills at uncovering the story, weaving intricate details into compelling narratives that inform and engage readers to broadcast about forced labour and fair recruitment.

Under the ILO Bridge -II project funded by the United States Department of Labor (USDOL), twenty-five journalists were trained on this media toolkit earlier in January of this year, and this event was the second event to broaden engagement of media in reporting on forced labour and fair recruitment. The NHRCM Commissioner Khunan Jargalsaikhan emphasized the media role in raising public awareness of forced labour and fair recruitment. Participants discussed about how they can use and promote the toolkit.

The organizers welcomed initiatives of universities, colleges and training institutes for journalism to collaborate to take forward this media training and outreach, and to build and strengthen capacities of their teaching staff and students.
