March Against Human Trafficking
ILO, SLBFE and Migrant Trainees will be marching to raise awareness on Human Trafficking on Wold Day Against Trafficking in Persons
Human trafficking is a crime that exploits women, children and men for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. The International Labour Organization estimates that 25 million people are victims of forced labour globally. This estimate also includes victims of human trafficking for labour and sexual exploitation. While it is not known how many of these victims were trafficked, the estimate implies that currently, there are millions of trafficking in persons victims in the world.
The ILO EQUIP Project initiated an awareness raising campaign on the “World day against Trafficking in Persons “30th July 2018 together with SLBFE and migrant trainees. This campaign will target communities in specific hotspots of outbound migration. Data from the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment indicates that Colombo is a hotspots for outbound migration, with the highest rates of migration witnessed amongst low-skilled and domestic workers Owing to their relative socioeconomic disadvantage, these groups are likely to be more prone to being trafficked. This is because there is a definite link between socioeconomic disadvantages on the one hand, and information access, employment alternatives and awareness levels on the other. The weaker the individual is with respect to the latter factors, the more susceptible he or she is to being trafficked.
