Live talk on “Ending child labour and unacceptable forms of work in global supply chains” by Mr Jesús Miguel Sanz, the Ambassador and Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Thailand

The focus of the 2016 World Day Against Child Labour is on child labour and supply chains. Supply chains are the sequence of activities/processes involved in the production and distribution of a product. With globalization, supply chains have become increasingly complex, involving workers, small producers, and enterprises around the world. While most child labour occurs in production for domestic markets, children can also be found working in the production of goods and services for export.

Ahead of the World Day Against Child Labour, the EU funded project “Combatting Unacceptable Forms of Work in the Thai Fishing and Seafood Industry” implemented by the ILO partners with NIST International School to host a live talk on “Ending child labour and unacceptable forms of work in global supply chains”. The event provides an opportunity for youth to learn about the issue and to explore the role they can play in supporting efforts to combat child labour.

Following the event, youth are called upon to raise awareness about the issue and share their ideas for combatting child labour through participation in the ILO project’s vox pop campaign - #youthrespond – on World Day Against Child Labour, 12 June 2016.

Objectives:

1. To raise awareness about child labour and unacceptable forms of work in global supply chains;
2. To raise awareness about the EU funded ILO project in Thailand;
3. To mobilize youth support for efforts to combat child labour;

Following the talk, a 30 minute Q&A session is held where the audience and online viewers can put questions Mr Jesús Miguel Sanz, the Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Thailand and Lao PDR, and Mr Maurizio Bussi, the ILO Director of the Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (PDR).

With celebrities and supporters in Thailand, the ILO Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (PDR) is calling on youth across the region to join the campaign #NoChildLabour on 12 June 2016 by responding to the call for Vox Pop submissions.

The campaign is designed to get young peoples views and ideas on innovative and practical measures that can be taken to combat child labour in the fishing and seafood sector.
